Bigger is Better? - The biggest casino in the US is...

Which casino is the biggest casino in the US? Is it one of the famous Vegas Strip properties like the MGM Grand, The Mirage, The Luxor or The Excalibur? In this article we will introduce you to the biggest casino in the United States. Read on to find out who the winner is.

Las Vegas - the gaming empire of the world

Las Vegas is the gaming empire of the world. It's estimated that more than 25 million people visit Las Vegas every year, and it's also one of the fastest growing cities in the US. The oldest casinos in Vegas are located downtown, with the most famous probably being the Binion's Horseshoe, founded by Benny Binion in 1951, and home to the World Series of Poker since 1970.

But, while downtown Vegas is a good place to stay and to gamble, the "capital" of the Las Vegas gaming empire, is the Las Vegas Strip. Once nothing more than a highway through the Mojave desert, connecting Las Vegas with Los Angeles, today, the Las Vegas Strip is an oasis of the most extravagant gaming palaces ever known to mankind, like the Luxor, the Excalibur and the Tropicana, to name a few.

Ever planned to visit the great pyramid of Cheops and the Sphinx in Egypt? You might just as well visit the pyramid shaped Luxor Hotel and Casino located on the south of the Las Vegas Strip. It's front entrance is guarded by a ten story tall Sphinx, that's actually taller than the Egyptian original, and just like the original has an opening in it's left paw.

Want to take a tour of Europe, to visit all those legendary medieval castles? Visit the Excalibur Casino instead, conveniently located on the Las Vegas Strip. The Excalibur Hotel and Casino is themed as a medieval castle, with a drawbridge entrance and a 51-foot fire breathing dragon. And of course you can gamble there too, which you can't in a real medieval castle!.

Bigger is better - which casino is the biggest in the US?

On the Las Vegas Strip, the casino resorts compete with each other as to who can build the biggest and most extravagant themed casino. The philosophy to attract people to the gaming rooms is "Bigger is Better". This leads to the question, that we like to answer in this article : Which casino is the biggest in the United States?

Is it the magnificent pyramid shaped Luxor Casino, which opened in 1993, costing $375 million? Is it perhaps the medieval styled castle, also known as the Excalibur Casino, which opened it's doors in 1990, costing more than $290 million? Or rather, is it the MGM Grand, as big as four football fields combined, that opened up in 1993, for a grand total cost of $1 billion!? Read on!

And the winner is...

The biggest casino in the United States is: *not* the Luxor Hotel and Casino, *not* the Excalibur casino and *not* the MGM Grand. But then it surely must be another casino located on the Las Vegas Strip, right? Perhaps The Tropicana, Caesars Palace, The Mirage, Treasure Island or Circus Circus?

Surprisingly, the biggest and most profitable casino in the US isn't even located on the Las Vegas Strip, and in fact it isn't in Vegas at all. The biggest casino in the US is: .....Foxwoods Resort, Ledyard, Connecticut!!

New England's Foxwoods resort and casino was opened in 1992 by the Mashantucket Pequot tribe, costing "only" $60 million. After it's initial success, another $300 million was invested in the resort, making Foxwoods the largest casino worldwide, covering 315,000 square feet of gaming rooms, operating 6,400 slot machines and employing 2,000+ dealers (about 3 times as big as an average casino on the Las Vegas Strip). More than 40,000 guests visit Foxwoods each day. Annual revenues of Foxwoods are estimated at more than $1 billion, making it truly the biggest and most profitable casino in the US.
