House edge
You will only discover if you like a particular casino game by
playing it. Most casinos offer to try their games for fun, without
risking any money. That's the best way to find out which casino
game suits you best. However, it is possible to characterize the
casino games discussed here at a more general level, i.e. by associated
risk and house edge.
House edge
The house edge of a particular game tells you how much money
you will expect to lose on each bet you make in the long term. The
higher the house edge, the more money you can expect to lose in the
long term. That doesn't mean you will always lose money when playing
at a casino, because in the short term anything is possible. Otherwise
you wouldn't be gambling! This is due to the risk that is associated
with each game.
Risk
The risk of a particular game gives you an indication how much
your balance will fluctuate from expected results. A high risk offers
the possibility to win big in the short term, but also to quickly
burn your money. A low risk allows your bankroll to last longer, but
also promises only moderate wins (or losses). Below you will find
a diagram, in which each casino game is characterized by their house
edge and risk (click on the diagram to learn more about a particular
game).
* Video Poker = 9/6 full pay Jacks or better,
Blackjack = Atlantic city rules, Roulette = American double-zero
Which game suits you?
If you like to live on the edge and have enough money to burn, you
will probably like high-risk games in the yellow and red squares,
such as Let It Ride or Video Poker. If you are satisfied with small
wins (or losses) and like to play longer, low-risk games in the green
square, like Blackjack, Baccarat or Pai Gow Poker, will probably more
suit you. But you will only find out for sure which game you like
by playing them. You can play Craps, Slots, Roulette, Blackjack &
Video Poker for free on this
page.
